How Doctors Can Get Registered and Compliant to Work with Clarity Locums

Locum work in Ireland offers doctors flexibility, varied experiences, and opportunities to expand their professional horizons. At Clarity Locums, we make it simple for doctors to get started by guiding them through the registration and compliance process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you become eligible to work as a locum doctor in Ireland.

Step 1: Register with the Irish Medical Council (IMC)

To practice medicine in Ireland, doctors must be registered with the Irish Medical Council (IMC). Follow these steps:

Determine Your Eligibility

Review the IMC’s registration pathways based on your medical degree and training. Common routes include:

  1. General Registration: For those who meet basic medical training requirements.
  2. Specialist Registration: For those with higher training or specialist qualifications.

Prepare Your Documents

Typical documents include:

  1. A recognised medical degree.
  2. Proof of identity (e.g., passport).
  3. Certificates of good standing from any medical councils where you’ve previously been registered.
  4. Proof of clinical training or postgraduate qualifications (for specialist applications).

Submit Your Application

Complete your application online via the IMC portal. Ensure all documents are certified and meet IMC standards. (this can take up to 6 months!)

Undergo Verification

IMC uses EPIC (Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials) for verifying documents. Register and upload your credentials on EPIC if required.

Await Approval

Once your application is approved, you’ll receive your IMC registration certificate, which is essential for working in Ireland.

Step 2: Obtain Medical Indemnity Insurance

Doctors in Ireland must have appropriate medical indemnity coverage to protect themselves and their patients. This can be arranged through organisations such as:

  • Medical Protection Society (MPS)
  • Irish Medical Organisation (IMO)
  • Challenge insurance

It is the responsibility of the GP to make sure your policy covers locum work and the specific areas of practice you’ll be working in.

Step 3: Garda Vetting

All healthcare professionals in Ireland must undergo Garda vetting to ensure compliance with child and vulnerable adult protection policies. Clarity Locums assists you with this process by providing guidance on submitting your application through the National Vetting Bureau.

Step 4: Provide References and Documentation

To complete your compliance file with Clarity Locums, you’ll need:

  • Two recent references from professional supervisors or colleagues.
  • A current CV detailing your work history and clinical experience.
  • Your IMC registration certificate and proof of indemnity insurance.
