Registering to Work as a Nurse in Ireland - Trained in the EU

Are you thinking of relocating to Ireland to work as a nurse?

Locuming as an agency nursing in Ireland has a number of great benefits, and here at Clarity we are hiring all around the country. Read our guide below on how you can get started with agency nursing as an EU trained nurse.

What is Agency Nursing?

Agency nursing means working as a nurse with a service providing company rather than directly for a hospital or healthcare facility. This can be done on an ad hoc or contractual basis. Agency nursing is a great option for nurses looking for flexibility in their career or who want to make extra money beside their full time job.

Getting Started

If you are considering working as an agency nurse in Ireland and have trained as a nurse within the European Union, the first step is to get registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).  This process consists of two stages; recognition of qualifications, followed by registration.

Part 1 - Recognition of Qualifications:

Step 1 -
Create a profile on MyNMBI, and pick 'Overseas Registration'. You will need to answer a series of questions which will categorise your application.

Step 2 -
Upload the necessary documents.
These include:

  • A certified copy of your passport
  • A certified copy of your qualification parchment
  • Other relevant training,
  • Certificate(s) of current professional status (otherwise known as a certificate of good standing) for all jurisdictions where you are currently, or were previously registered, and
  • Official translations for any documents that are not in English

Step 3 -
Outline your professional experience since qualifying as a nurse. You will need to download the employment form and give it to your employers for completion. After this, you will then be asked to enter details of your relevant qualifications. Download the qualification form and give to your college for completion. The college will also need to provide you with the transcript for the qualification.

Step 4 -
Save your application. When the documents have been returned to you from the college and employers, log back in and upload them. You will need to obtain a certified copy of the transcript first before you upload. Be sure to check all your entries and documentation very carefully before continuing. You can save and edit your application. Do not submit an incomplete application as this will lead to delays. After checking that all your details and documents are correct, you will then complete a declaration and proceed to pay the fee.

Step 5 -
Once your application is submitted, it will be queued for the first assessment. The NMBI will carry out source verification on certain documents and carry out an administrative assessment. If your application is incomplete, you will be contacted by email to provide the missing information and your application will not continue until you have provided the required documentation.

Step 6 -
After your application is complete, it will proceed to education assessment. The qualification assessor may require further information from you at this stage. As a nurse who trains within the EU, you are under the EU directive and should achieve automatic qualification recognition.

Part 2 - Registration

Step 1 - Sign into your MyNMBI account
Step 2 - Select 'Overseas Registration'
Step 3- Provide evidence of English Language proficiency
There are three different ways to show evidence:

  • Completed Nursing or midwifery training in an NMBI recognised English speaking country
  • Registered and practised in an NMBI recognised majority English speaking country for three years within the last five years
  • Completed IELTS or OET English language test to the minimum scores accepted by the NMBI

Step 4 -

Complete a fit and proper declaration

Pay the appropriate fee and submit your application

Step 5 -

The NMBI will then carry out an administrative assessment of your registration application. If your application is not complete, you will be contacted by email to provide the missing information.

Once your registration to the NMBI is complete, you can then look into registering with Clarity Locums as an agency nurse online or via our app. The process is streamlined and easy to complete.
