Registering as a doctor in Ireland

Ireland is an attractive country for doctors, not only because of the English language but also because doctors can easily find work in public or private hospitals and other healthcare institutions, but also work as a locum. Working as a locum doctor in Ireland is particularly rewarding, and if you are a specialist even more.

All doctors who wish to practice in Ireland must be registered with the Irish Medical Council. To check if you are eligible for registration, please visit the IMC website and check it here.

For candidates who are registering for the first time, there are 4 registration routes, depending on whether you graduated in Ireland, in the EEA area or in a non-EU / EEA member state. See more information here.

Route 1: Trained as a Specialist in a European Union/ European Economic
Route 2: Acquired Rights as a Specialist in a European Union/ European Economic Area Member State
Route 3: Trained as a Specialist in a Third Country and Recognised as a Specialist in Another European Union/ European Economic Area Member State
Route 4: Hold a specialist qualification on a list of specialist qualifications approved by the Medical Council for recognition

The registration process is done online through the IMC website. To do this, you must create an online account and send all the necessary documents. Please note that all documents not written in English must be translated into English and notarized.

If you graduated outside Ireland, you will need to prove your English proficiency. This can be done with the IELTS Academic, OET or equivalent certificate. If you have a medical degree in an English-speaking country, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA, you will not need it. Learn more about the language requirements here.

The Irish Medical Council registry has several divisions, namely:

  • Internship registration
  • Supervised registration
  • Trainee Specialist registration
  • General registration
  • Specialist registration
  • Visiting EEA registration

Depending on the division you are registering, the IMC fees will be different. To learn more about registration fees and registration dates, please check the IMC website here.
