The Dementia Friends programme is an initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society with the aim of transforming people’s perception of dementia. It is estimated that over 850,000 live with dementia across the UK. The scheme sets out to change our understanding of the condition, and learn how we can make life easier for those with dementia.
Pharmacies and pharmacy staff play a huge role in this initiative. You, as a pharmacist, act not only as a provider of medicinal services, but also as a source of moral support. By becoming a Dementia Friend, you are encouraging yourself to better understand a patient, friend, or family member who has been affected by this condition, and in turn, allow them to regain confidence performing routine tasks, such as collecting a prescription.
As a pharmacist, you will interact with patients who have some form of dementia, therefore many major chains have made this an essential accreditation to have in order to work with them. If you are considering booking locum shifts, we highly encourage locums to complete this training. The process is quick and simple. All that is required from you is to sign up and watch a 5 minute video. For those who would like to dive a little deeper, you can attend a 45 minute information session run by a volunteer ambassador.
